Apparently every year on the Friday before Memorial Day, Mitchell's Place takes a field trip to the Birmingham Zoo. Parents bring the kids and meet their teachers out front and tour the zoo together. We could not have ordered a more perfect day: 75 degrees, almost no humidity, and sunny! The boys were so excited. One of the highlights was getting to tour the new African exhibit which had only been opened for about a month. We were very impressed!
Of course, we had to take a ride on the train!!

Here are a few scenes from the African exhibit:

When this big fella decided to pee right after this photo was taken, all the children were in complete amazement! (I have to say the adults were too!) |
Of course, we had to check out the lions and monkeys too; and then finished it off with a picnic lunch. It was a great day! Thanks Mrs. Sandy for arranging such a fun field trip!
The heat and humidity was to get cranked up for the rest of the weekend which was perfect as we planned to spend Saturday grilling and swimming out back. Grandpa and Ms. Karen were coming down for a visit and we also had the Huggins family over. The menu consisted of ribs, chicken, potato salad, bbq beans, and homemade ice cream. Tom began to feel bad Saturday morning, pushing through with last minute shopping and cooking, but it soon became apparent he was dealing with a stomach virus, and had to turn over the grilling duties to me---no pressure!! It's a good thing I have a knack for grilling, and with everyone pitching in and the big kids watching Aidan and Andrew in the pool, we managed to pull off a pretty good lunch! Poor Tom, that virus was more like a 48-hour puke fest, and it wasn't until Monday that he felt better. Of course we stayed home for the holiday, grilled burgers and swam--just the five of us.
After a day of swimming, what better way to relax than a cool movie inside with popcorn?
Yay for summer!!!
